Fourth Year Projects
Galoppatoio di Villa Borghese, Roma
Fall 2014, 15 Weeks
Currently in Villa Borghese, there is a large event space called Piazza di Sienna that gets destroyed every year by the coming and going of spectators, event equipment, and vehicles. To preserve this area, we were asked to design a new space where they can hold the same events, such as an annual horse jumping competition. By connecting the important Villa Medici with the two other most important points in Villa Borghese, my group and I created two axes through the site with a central space in between where we chose to place our new event arena. On one axis we placed the Eventarium (supporting space for arena) and on the other, a museum.
Following this, I worked individually to design the Eventarium building and the landscaping of the entire site. The design of the eventarium was intentionally linear to not only mimic the historic Aurelian Wall that flanks a portion of our site, but also to move spectators and pedestrians both visually and physically throughout the building and along the one axis. The landscaping and paths were derived from the four created entrances and the desired flows of foot traffic.
